GR World vs Image Sync: Which Ricoh GR App Do You Need?
Ricoh currently ships two official companion apps, and which one you need is decided mostly by your camera, not by preference. Image Sync is the long-serving app that also covers Pentax bodies. GR World is the newer app built around the current GR generation.
The short answer
- GR IV: GR World. Image Sync does not support it.
- GR II: Image Sync, in practice. GR World will pair with a GR II, but only for transfers, no remote shooting, no location info, and no firmware updates.
- GR III / GR IIIx: either app works; the differences below decide it.

Remote shooting
This is the sharpest practical difference for GR III and GR IIIx owners. Image Sync includes a live-view remote with exposure control, so you can frame and adjust from the phone. GR World’s remote is more limited, and the missing live view is one of the most common complaints in its public reviews as of June 2026; some owners report keeping Image Sync installed just for remote shooting.
Transfers and reliability
Neither app has a strong public track record here. Image Sync reviews cluster around connections that drop mid-session, stalled transfers, and trouble importing RAW files. GR World reviews cluster around connections that never establish and general instability. Firmware updates
Camera firmware is delivered through Ricoh’s official channels: the official apps and the downloads on Ricoh’s support site (installed from an SD card). This is the one job an independent app cannot take over, so keep the official app that matches your camera installed even if you rarely open it.
Can you install both?
Yes. Image Sync and GR World can sit on the same iPhone side by side. Just connect to the camera from one app at a time, since the camera accepts a single companion session.
Where GR Snap fits
If you landed here because neither official app has been reliable, GR Snap is an independent third option with transfer support for the GR II, GR III, GR IIIx, and GR IV. The GR II requires a manual Wi-Fi connection and supports transfers only, with no Bluetooth wake, live view, or remote capture.
