Ricoh GR iPhone Apps: Image Sync, GR World, or Neither?
If you shoot a Ricoh GR and want to control it from your iPhone or pull photos off it, the App Store is genuinely confusing: two official apps that split the lineup by camera, plus a handful of third-party apps that all look alike from their listings. This guide sorts through them.
Every app here is GR-specific and currently on the US App Store, and all ratings are as of July 2026. This is an iPhone and iOS guide, since that is who we build for. GR II owners should know Ricoh’s official app exists on Android too, but Android apps are out of scope here.
One disclosure first, because the honesty is the point: we make GR Snap, and we have included it in this list alongside everything else, so read our take on it with that in mind. Every app below, ours included, gets at least one genuine caveat.

Pick by need
- Pure transfer reliability: GR Linker. Its whole design is browsing and downloading JPG, RAW, and MOV fast, with multi-select and concurrent downloads.
- A full-featured remote on the newer models: GR Snap (ours). Live view with tap to focus and two-way parameter sync on GR III / IIIx / IV; GR II is manual Wi-Fi transfer only.
- Free and official: whichever official app matches your camera. GR IV owners get GR World, GR III and GR IIIx owners can use either, and GR II owners get Image Sync.
- A GR II with remote shooting: GR Remote Viewer or Image Sync. GR World only transfers on a GR II.
- Film recipes and presets: GR Lab, or the recipes-only tool Camset if you just want presets.
- Free and happy to be an early adopter: GR Link, a brand-new indie app (see the caveat below about its rating base).
The apps, one by one
Image Sync (official, free)
Ricoh’s long-serving official app, and the one that also covers Pentax bodies. It supports the GR II, GR III, and GR IIIx, and its remote includes live view with exposure control, which is still the main reason some owners keep it installed. The caveats are real, though: it does not support the GR IV at all, and at 1.8 out of 5 from 197 ratings (as of July 2026) it holds the lowest score of any app here, with public reviews clustering on connections that drop mid-session, stalled transfers, and RAW import trouble. Latest version 2.1.32, May 2026. Best for: GR III / IIIx owners who want an official live-view remote for free, and GR II owners.
GR World (official, free)
Ricoh’s newer official app, and the only official option for the GR IV, including its HDF and Monochrome variants. It also covers the GR III and GR IIIx (HDF) fully, and pairs with a GR II for transfers only, with no remote, no location info, and no firmware updates on that body. In-app firmware updates are being rolled out starting with the GR IV. The caveat: its remote is simpler than Image Sync’s, and the missing live view is the most common complaint in its public reviews, alongside connections that never establish. At 2.2 out of 5 from 58 ratings (as of July 2026) it scores only marginally better than Image Sync. Latest version 1.4.0, June 2026. Best for: GR IV owners, who have no other official choice.
GR Snap ($9.99 one-time)
This is our app, so weigh what follows accordingly. GR Snap is a paid, independent app that transfers photos from the whole current lineup: GR II, GR III, GR IIIx (including HDF), and GR IV. On the GR III / IIIx / IV, the remote shows live view with tap to focus, camera parameters sync both ways, and one tap wakes the camera over Bluetooth and joins its Wi-Fi. The GR II instead requires a manual Wi-Fi connection and supports transfers only, with no Bluetooth wake, live view, or remote capture. Saved cameras reconnect on their own where supported, and batch downloads keep running in the background with progress on the Lock Screen and Dynamic Island. The honest caveats: it costs $9.99 where the official apps are free, it has no film-recipe feature and no geotagging, and its 5.0 rating rests on just 11 ratings, a much smaller base than the established third-party apps. Latest version 1.2.0, July 2026. Best for: owners who want transfers across the current GR lineup and a remote on the GR III / IIIx / IV.
GR Remote Viewer for GR2 & GR3 ($9.99)
The largest third-party app by review count, at 4.2 out of 5 from 216 ratings (as of July 2026), and the broadest toolbox: a remote with focus and parameter control, automatic geotagging, NFC tap-to-connect, and export to iCloud Drive, FTP, or WebDAV. Two caveats matter. It supports the GR II, GR III, and GR IIIx only, with no GR IV support, and its last update was version 4.0.0 in January 2025, roughly eighteen months stale as of this writing. Best for: GR II / III / IIIx owners who want geotagging and flexible export and do not need GR IV support.
GR Linker ($7.99)
The transfer specialist. GR Linker’s listing centers on moving files, not remote control: it browses JPG, RAW, and MOV, shows EXIF, supports swipe multi-select, and runs concurrent downloads, across the GR II, GR III, GR IIIx, and GR IV (including HDF). At 4.5 out of 5 from 107 ratings (as of July 2026) it holds the highest score among the established third-party apps, and it is actively maintained, with version 2.1.6 shipping July 4 2026. The caveat is simply scope: if you want live-view remote shooting, this is not the app for it. Best for: anyone whose priority is fast, reliable transfers across every current model.
GR Lover ($9.99)
A feature-heavy paid app covering the GR II, GR III / IIIx, and GR IV. Beyond remote control it piles on GPS tagging with EXIF, batch background downloads, NFC and Bluetooth pairing, WebDAV, an Apple Watch remote, LivePhoto generation, and automatic photo borders. At 4.0 out of 5 from 30 ratings (as of July 2026) its base is modest. Latest version 5.2.6, June 17, 2026. Best for: owners who want the widest grab-bag of extras (Apple Watch, borders, LivePhoto).
GR Lab (free, with in-app purchases)
The recipes app. GR Lab pairs a live-view remote (with tap to focus) with recipe and preset management, shareable recipe cards, firmware update checks, a shutter-count inquiry, and iCloud sync, across the GR II, GR III series, and GR IV series. It is free to start, with in-app purchases from $1.99 to $24.99. Users report that parts of the interface remain in Chinese. Latest version 3.0.1, February 13, 2026; it holds 4.0 out of 5 from 21 ratings (as of July 2026). Best for: shooters who care most about managing and sharing film recipes.
GR Link (free)
A brand-new indie app covering the GR II, GR III (HDF), GR IIIx (HDF), and GR IV (HDF and Monochrome). It offers a remote shutter and a live viewfinder with tap to focus, a download queue with lock-screen progress, location tagging, image-control presets with iCloud sync, and home-screen widgets. It requires iOS 17.2 or later. The one caveat that overrides everything else: it currently has a single 5.0 rating, so it is effectively unrated, with no track record yet to judge reliability by. Best for: free-app seekers who are comfortable being early adopters and reporting bugs.
Common questions
Can I keep two companion apps installed at once? Yes. Any combination of these apps can sit on the same iPhone. The only rule is that the camera accepts one companion connection at a time, so connect from a single app in a given session rather than two at once.
Why do so many third-party GR apps exist? Largely because the official apps have struggled. Image Sync sits at 1.8 and GR World at 2.2 out of 5 (as of July 2026), and both apps’ public reviews are dominated by connection complaints. That gap is what every third-party app on this list is trying to fill.
I have a GR IV. What are my options? GR World is the only official app that supports the GR IV, so keep it installed for firmware updates. For day-to-day use you also have GR Snap, GR Linker, GR Lover, GR Lab, and GR Link, all of which cover the GR IV. Note that Image Sync and GR Remote Viewer do not.
Which app handles firmware updates? Only the official channels. Camera firmware comes from Ricoh’s official apps and its support-site downloads (installed from an SD card), and no third-party app can take that over. Keep the official app that matches your camera installed even if you shoot with something else day to day.
