Ricoh GR to iPhone: How to Transfer Photos (Wi-Fi, App, or Card Reader)
A Ricoh GR has no cloud upload and no cellular radio, so every transfer method comes down to one of two things: connecting wirelessly to the camera’s own Wi-Fi, or moving the SD card’s files over physically. Which is faster depends on your camera model, how many files you’re moving, and whether you shoot RAW.
The quick answer
- Free and official: Image Sync (GR II / III / IIIx) or GR World (GR III / IIIx / IV, transfer only on GR II), whichever matches your camera.
- A handful of photos, fastest setup: the official app for your model, over Wi-Fi.
- A full card, or a lot of RAW and video: an SD card reader. No pairing, no waiting on a spinning Wi-Fi icon.
- Background downloads, a live view remote, or a better library view: a third-party app such as GR Snap (ours, paid) or GR Linker.
Method 1: Ricoh Image Sync (official, free)
Image Sync supports the GR II, GR III, and GR IIIx. It does not support the GR IV.
- On the camera, turn on Bluetooth (GR III / IIIx) or wireless LAN (GR II), and enable image transfer.
- Open Image Sync and select your camera.
- Confirm the iOS prompt to join the camera’s Wi-Fi network (on GR II, join the network manually in iOS Settings first).
- Allow the Bluetooth, Local Network, and Photos permissions when iOS asks; each is granted per app.
- Browse the camera’s photo library inside the app and download what you need.

Method 2: Ricoh GR World (official, free)
GR World is the official app for the GR IV, including its HDF and Monochrome variants, and also fully supports the GR III and GR IIIx (HDF). It pairs with a GR II too, but for transfers only, with no remote shutter, location tagging, or firmware updates on that model.
- On the camera, turn on Bluetooth and enable image transfer.
- Open GR World, select the camera, and confirm the Wi-Fi join prompt on the iPhone.
- Grant the Bluetooth, Local Network, and Photos permissions.
- Select photos from the camera’s library and transfer them to your library.

Method 3: SD card reader or USB-C cable
For a full memory card, or a batch of large DNG and MOV files, a card reader usually beats Wi-Fi on speed and costs the camera’s battery less.
- Turn off the camera and remove the SD card (or, if your camera and cable support USB mass-storage mode, connect it directly with a USB-C cable instead).
- Insert the card into a Lightning or USB-C card reader and plug it into the iPhone or iPad.
- Open the Photos app; an Import screen appears automatically.
- Select the files you want, or tap Select All, then Import.
- Once the import finishes, eject the reader and put the card back in the camera.
No camera app, Bluetooth, or Wi-Fi login required, though you do need to carry the accessory and pull the card by hand.
Method 4: Third-party apps, including GR Snap
Beyond Ricoh’s two apps, several independent apps also transfer photos over the camera’s Wi-Fi, each with a different focus: some lean into fast, no-frills transfer, others add a remote on top. On the GR III, GR IIIx, and GR IV:
- Turn on Bluetooth and image transfer on the camera.
- In GR Snap, select and pair the camera; one tap wakes it over Bluetooth and joins its Wi-Fi.
- Confirm the iOS Wi-Fi join prompt.
- Select photos (single or multi-select) and start the download.
Downloads run as a background queue, with progress visible on the Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island, and these models also get a live view remote with tap to focus. On the GR II, join the camera’s Wi-Fi manually first, then open GR Snap; that model supports transfer only, with no Bluetooth wake, live view, or remote capture.
Transferring from a GR IV: when the download sits at 0%
On the GR IV specifically, a wireless download can start and then sit at 0% indefinitely, with no error and no timeout. It turns up most often after you switch to another app or lock the phone mid-transfer. The GR III and GR IIIx do not behave this way.
The cause is not the camera, and not any one app. The GR IV’s Wi-Fi network carries no route to the internet, and iOS can read that as a dead connection. When cellular or another known network is available as an alternative, iOS quietly holds back background transfers running on the camera’s hotspot instead of letting them through. In our testing, the same iPhone reproduced this on a GR IV and never on a GR III, and any app transferring in the background over that network can run into it.
Three ways around it, most reliable first:
- Turn on Airplane Mode, then switch Wi-Fi back on by hand and rejoin the camera’s network. With no cellular alternative left to fall back on, iOS lets the transfer proceed.
- Keep the transferring app in the foreground, with the screen awake, until the batch finishes.
- Use a card reader (Method 3) for anything large. It sidesteps the whole problem.

RAW (DNG) and MOV: what actually transfers
- JPG transfers cleanly through every method here. It’s the smallest file and needs no special handling.
- DNG (RAW) is supported by all four methods, though Image Sync’s public reviews mention occasional RAW import trouble. GR Snap and a card reader both treat a JPG+DNG pair as a single unit.
- MOV transfers over Wi-Fi through any of the apps, but video files are large, and a Wi-Fi connection that drops mid-transfer typically restarts the affected file rather than resuming it. For long clips, or a folder full of them, a card reader is the more reliable choice.
Check your iPhone’s free storage before a large transfer, especially with RAW or video. The camera’s Wi-Fi has no internet access, so nothing streams in from the cloud to fill the gap, but a phone that’s low on storage, low on battery, or missing a permission will stall a transfer just the same.
Common pitfalls
- VPN swallowing the connection. The camera’s Wi-Fi has no route to the internet; an always-on VPN profile routes requests into its tunnel and lets them time out instead. Turn it off while transferring.
- iOS permissions declined once, forever. Bluetooth, Local Network, and Photos permissions are each asked once per app. A mistaken “Don’t Allow” silently breaks every later session until you fix it in iOS Settings, under Privacy & Security.
- Low storage killing a batch download. Check Settings, then General, then iPhone Storage before pulling a full card of RAW or video.
- A dropped Wi-Fi link losing progress. Interrupted wireless transfers restart the affected file instead of resuming it, so keep the phone close to the camera and awake during large batches.
